Custom Rugs as Art
We started our business in rug making in the year 2000. Having a Eureka moment whilst being heavily pregnant with her first child – Barjis Chohan wanted to create rugs as a piece of Art. She started painting during her pregnancy as a hobby not knowing that her art work will be transformed into Rugs! After the delivery of her beautiful daughter Malaaikah ( who is now 18), Barjis started researching on rug suppliers. Turned down by several rug manufacturers who thought she was crazy to produce grading at this level in her work. She eventually found suppliers who could produce her paintings into rugs and since then she has never looked back.
“I was not privileged to continue Art as a profession and not patient enough to wait for my Art to be famous after I die. The only way of coming close to Art were rugs. Not for the museum but functional rugs. The true Entrepreneur in me saw this as an opportunity – aesthetically beautiful yet commercially successful. This has always been the ethos of Barjis: whether its clothing, scarves, cushions or our rugs” – Barjis Chohan, CEO, Barjis London.
From humble beginnings, Barjis used her savings of £3000 from a freelance Design project to launch her rug business. She could have borrowed funds from her husband or dad but Barjis believes that a woman should be independent and self made.
” By being independent – your success and failures are just yours, with no liabilities or accountability to your family or the bank” – said Barjis Chohan.
Barjis was a pioneer in grading in the rugs and won several awards including Entrepreneur of the Year in London – awarded by Shell livewire, Designer in International Trade awarded by Financial Mail on Sunday and 1st runner up in Female Owned Business of the Year- awarded by UK Trade and Investment.
“Absolutely beautiful rugs” – Evening Standard.
“Hopelessly modern works of functional art”- Timeout
“Barjis has harnessed her brilliant creative talents and combined them with solid commercial nous.Without doubt she will succeed” – Financial Mail on Sunday.
Through hard work and perseverance – Barjis has expanded into Fashion, Scarves, cushions and plans to diversify its products range to include Wall paper, Fashion accessories, Menswear and Kidswear to it’s portfolio.
“I do not follow the crowd – I make my own rules. The only rule I follow in business is that the product should speak for itself, the rest will follow. Celebrity or blogger endorsements do not mean anything to me. Barjis London is defined by it’s work and not defined by how many followers we have on social media”. These days, brands are focusing more on followers and bloggers and less on their ‘real’ customers. This is a dangerous path to take, brands need to focus more on the product and their customers and less on the noise. Staying true to our brand is the most important factor in our success”. – Barjis Chohan, CEO, Barjis London.
