Hijabi supermodel quits modeling

Hijabi Supermodel Halima Aden has decided to step down as a model. She felt she was compromising with her faith.
It’s commendable to choose principle over profit.
When I chose to stop doing fashion shows in 2017; I was told that my business would suffer.
My decision for dropping shows was because I didn’t want to promote skinny models. I found the concept of shows outdated, frivolous, and a complete waste of money.
During my first show in Dubai, I couldn’t find one of my models; we found her sleeping on the floor; dehydrated and burnt out. I did question why am I entering an industry that treated young girls so harshly?
With the high rise of low self-esteem amongst young girls. I realised that I was part of the problem!
Also going against my faith and showcasing women being objectified; did not resonate with me.
If you cannot change the status quo then remove yourself from it.
I believe that we can continue being creative without the noise and the shallow representation of women. So I took a back seat and focused on my work.
I have no regrets over my decision and I am at peace!
As Halima beautifully said:
“If the opportunity and space don’t feel right then walk away.”
Have you walked away from an opportunity that didn’t feel right for you?
